Ice Machine Installation

How do I choose the right ice machine for my situation?
When looking at the manufacturer’s specification sheet you will see an approximate number of pounds of ice produced per 24 hours. Many times the production rate will be provided for ideal conditions of 70 degrees F for the surrounding air and 50 degrees F for the incoming water supply.

What size ice storage bin will I need?
It is two to three times more expensive to produce a pound of ice than to store it, depending upon your air and water temperatures. Either way, having full bins of ice at the ready will save you time and money. Even if you don’t use all of the ice, it costs less to keep it in the bin than to have to produce it. However, consider your peak usage when determining your bin size and add 20% capacity to be safe. If your daily ice requirements are fairly consistent then your ice bin capacity will need to hold the daily production quantity.

Will I need a water filter?
A water filtration system, installed in the water supply line to the ice machine, will remove mineral sediment such as calcium and lime and prevent scale formation. The filter also keeps out parasites and other bacteria such as slime fungus, removes odor, and creates a tasteless ice that will not change the flavor of beverages.

Regularly removing sediment will increase the lifetime of your ice machine. The cause of many ice machine breakdowns can be traced to issues with the water supply. Therefore, if you know your water has a high mineral content, invest in a good water filtration system to prevent problems from occurring and replace the filter cartridge frequently.

Ice Machine pre-Installation checklist

Drain:

Floor Drain
Within 6 feet of the machine
Allows for ¼ inch fall for every foot of drain pipe
Doesn’t present a tripping hazard

Electricity:

For 110V machines, a 20 amp dedicated circuit
For 220V machines, majority require 20 amp, some 30 amp
220V systems are designed for use with 4-wire system (i.e. dedicated neutral)

Water:

Water line capable of delivering 5 gallons per minute with a dedicated shutoff valve within 6 feet of the machine.
Machines below 1300 lbs require 3/8 inch supply line.
Machines at or above 1300 lbs require a 1/2 inch supply line.

Space:

Maintain room temperature between 45 and 85 degrees F
Allow enough air circulation to ensure hot spots do not develop around the ice machine.

Commercial Ice Machine Pre-Installation Checklist

The purpose of the commercial ice machine pre-installation checklist is to provide all with some guidance regarding what is required to successfully install a commercial ice maker. Ice Queen technicians will perform a thorough site survey prior to installation to ensure the installation will go smoothly.

For more detailed information on your Ice Machine Installation requirements, you may want to ask the manufacture of the Ice Machine (Such as: Manitowoc, Scotsman, Hoshizaki, etc ..)  for the equipment specification sheet for the ice machine model that you are considering. That will provide yourself and/or the Ice Queen technician with additional details on dimensions and other machine specifications.
